An ideal kitchen design incorporates a variety of workspaces at different heights (sitting and standing) for different functions whether food preparation, cooking, homework or other tasks. Wall ovens help reduce bending and reaching, which can be difficult for people with limited mobility. Creating a strong visual connection to dining and living spaces is beneficial to kitchen design and allows families and guests to continue socializing while preparing meals.

Even a good universally designed kitchen might have to be adapted to convert for full use by seated people. In a universally designed kitchen, the overall space can remain the same, even as some cabinets and counters may have to be modified to become accessible.
